Nature conservation plays a vital role in the North-West where a number of excellent game reserves have been established. Rewarding safari options are plentiful.

Set in the crater of an extinct volcano and known as "the Jewel of the North-West", the Pilanesberg National Park is foremost among them. This is one of the few parks in South Africa which support almost all of the species (including the "Big Five") which formerly occurred naturally in the region.

The Vaal River, rated the most popular playground of the North-West, is always alive with holiday makers who while away the days swimming, water-skiing, pottering around in boats and relaxing in the shade of large umbrellas. Anglers notch up record catches, while leisure resorts attract an appreciative clientele, and comfortable hotels serve farm-fresh culinary fare.

 Mmabatho

The name is of Setswana origin and means "Mother of the People". Mmabatho’s modern city centre is noteworthy for its impressive administration buildings, many of which are decorated with striking contemporary designs, in keeping with its status as the capital of the North-West province. Although most of the government buildings are new, the town blends easily into the suburb of Mafikeng which is over 100 years old.

Mmabatho has an international airport, excellent hotels and conference centres, casinos, a university, cultural centres and several good shops. Mega City Shopping Centre is one of the most modern and attractive shopping centres in the province. Development during the past few years has been phenomenal, and the city continues to grow by leaps and bounds.

Mafikeng was the focus of world attention when it was besieged for seven months by Boer forces during the Anglo-Boer War and many places of interest are closely related to this historical event. Colonel Robert Baden-Powell was in charge of the British garrison during the siege, leading to the birth of the international Boy Scout movement in the town (formerly known as Mafeking).

Holidays may be enjoyed at a variety of resorts, hotels, town and country guesthouses, guest farms and game lodges. Inland dams and rivers offer exciting watersport opportunities and bird-watching, while hiking trails, horse-riding, game viewing and hunting are available throughout the region. Those interested in history will be fascinated by the romantic past of towns where the discovery of gold and diamonds drew thousands of fortune seekers from all over the world. The region also boasts vast cattle and game ranches and reserves offer holidays with a difference.  (Source: SATOUR)
