Hippo Waterfront on the banks of the Crocodile River 9 km from Nelspruit in Mpumalanga is a getaway with a difference! – from the raised timber en-suite 4-bedded suites and socializing lapa, dining area, pub and superb hospitality… to the river’s resident hippo’s creating a bit of excitement every now and again. Johan and Anna planned and built their beautiful retreat single-handed taking care of all possible needs guests may have. Hippo Waterfront offers relaxing views of the Crocodile River and the beautiful garden and rolling lawns blend in with the river and surrounding bush. Here one can enjoy nature in its full splendour from the lounge and dining areas. One can relax around the sparkling pool…. and it’s a heaven for birdlovers. Adventurous anglers are welcome to try their luck and cast a line in the usually gentle flowing Croc River (at own risk!). Hippo Waterfront has a communal kitchen and braai facilities are available to guests for self-catering. A few new fully equipped self-catering suites will be available in the near future. This is the ideal destination to use as base from where numerous tourist attractions, including day-trips to the Kruger National Park, can be explored.

Fishing Adventurous anglers are welcome to try their luck and cast a line in the usually gentle flowing Croc River (at own risk!).

Game Viewing Hippo Waterfront offers relaxing views of the Crocodile River and the beautiful garden and rolling lawns blend in with the river and surrounding bush. The resident hippo create a bit of excitement every now and again.

Bird Watching Here one can enjoy nature in its full splendour from the lounge and dining areas. One can relax around the sparkling pool…. and it’s a heaven for birdlovers.

Other Activities Lowveld Botical Gardens -- one of the finest and most interesting botanic gardens in South Africa, set in beautiful surroundings on the Crocodile River near Nelpruit. The gardens feature a number of unique botanical collections from a cycad garden to a tropical forest containing a comprehensive variety of fig trees.

NELSPRUIT: The dynamic provincial capital of Mpumalanga is also the largest town in the Lowveld. As such, it is well serviced with shops, restaurants and other facilities. It is attractively positioned in the valley of the Crocodile River and has a park like setting with many flowering trees. Oranges, sub-tropical fruit and nuts are grown extensively in the area. Hippo Waterfront has extremely good access to the many attractions such as the Kruger National Park and Barbeton, where in the gold rush days of the last century, it is reported that a reef so rich in gold was discovered, that it sparkled in the sun. Sudwala caves, Nelspruit Botanical Gardens featuring a complete collection of baobab species, the world-famous cycad colletion comprising all 36 southern African cycad species, and an African Rain Forest; Riverside shopping Mall and Casino Complex, Rottchers’ Orange Winery, Halls Farm Stall (11km), Crocodile and Reptile Park. Day trips to Blyde River Canyon, Bourke’s Luck Potholes, MacMac Falls, God’s Window and the quaint little towns of Pilgrim’s Rest, Graskop and Sabie. Day visits to the Kruger Park with entrance at Malelane Gate can also be planned. Kaapsehoop Historical Village offers many tourist attractions (horseriding, birdwatching (Blue Swallow) and hiking trail.
