Nelspruit - Alkmaar Farmstay Bush and tented camps

Alkmaar Farmstay is set in the heart of the Lowveld in the Schagen Valley on the Maputo Corridor 10 minutes from Nelspruit, the capital of Mpumalanga.

This tranquil farm is within close proximity of the Kruger National Park. It is also perfectly located for exploring the Lowveld tourist attractions like Blyde River Canyon, Pilgrim's Rest and Sudwala Caves. Alkmaar Farmstay is a birdwatcher's paradise with nesting white fronted bee-eaters, resident paradise flycatchers and long crested eagles being seen regularly.

Hiking, bass fishing and kayaking are available as well as a scenic 4X4 route. It is also the ideal stopover enroute to Mozambique.

Almaar now also offers a Bush Camp and two tented camps Acacia and Kiaat. This is apart from B&B in the Beautiful Guest house and two self-catering cottages (See separate web page on Farmstay)

Fishing Fishing Bass and other fish in farm dams -- Crocodile River close by

Game Viewing Alkmaar is close to the Kruger National Park. The Kruger sustains 147 species of mammal, 112 species of reptile (including 50 of snake), 34 of amphibian, 49 of fish (including the 'living fossil' lungfish and an ocean-living shark found in one of the rivers) and nearly 230 species of butterfly. For the bird-watcher, the park has special appeal: more than 530 avian species have been identified, among them ostrich, African fish eagle, vulture, bateleur, secretary bird, owl, hawk, francolin, hornbill and korhaan. The birds of prey are especially impressive

Other Activities Lowveld Botical Gardens -- one of the finest and most interesting botanic gardens in South Africa, set in beautiful surroundings on the Crocodile River near Nelspruit. The gardens feature a number of unique botanical collections from a Cycad garden to a tropical forest containing a comprehensive variety of fig trees.

NELSPRUIT: The dynamic provincial capital of Mpumalanga is also the largest town in the Lowveld. As such, it is well serviced with shops, restaurants and other facilities. It is attractively positioned in the valley of the Crocodile River and has a park like setting with many flowering trees. Oranges, sub-tropical fruit and nuts are grown extensively in the area. With extremely good access to the many attractions in the Kruger National Park, other attractions of the area include the Lowveld Botanical Gardens adjacent to the Nelspruit Waterfall, Sudwala Caves with the Dinosaur park close by and Barbeton, where in the gold rush days of the last century, it is reported that a reef so rich in gold was discovered, that it sparkled in the sun.

Tourist attractions in the area.
Visit the Sudwala Caves - one of the major tourist attractions in the Crocodile River Valley and only 15 km from the farm. The road between Blyde River Canyon and Pilgrim's Rest is particularly scenic and overlooks the Blyde River. Pilgrim's Rest is rich in history with an array of fascinating old style shops to explore. Kruger National Park. Near the entrance bridge of Sabie are the Bridal, Lone Creek and Horseshoe Falls.
